Close like a professional

Chicago, 1972.

I started to sweat. My face turned beet red. My intimidating prospect wasn’t helping. He stared daggers and tapped his fat fingers. Dead silence.

My heart beat worked overtime. I had to do something before fainting. My amateur presentation was over. Time to close.

Why was my throat so tight? I needed to say something before I passed out from not breathing. My voice squeaked:

“So, would you like to join?”

My prospect squinted his eyes and sharply said, “Get out!”

That was my introduction to closing prospects. Humiliation on steroids. 

It got worse. 

My worthless sponsor asked for a report. I told him, “My prospect said he wasn’t interested.” My worthless sponsor’s advice? “Go back and close harder. Don’t be a wimp.” (I didn’t go back.)
